Pressure relief valve for roller bit
This patent describes a roller-type well drilling bit. It comprises: a bit body assembly comprising a main bit body including a bearing pin structure having an annular outer surface. The body having lubricant passage means opening through the outer surface of the pin structure and extending through the interior of the bit body, a lubricant reservoir cavity communicating with the lubricant passage means distal the outer surface of the pin structure. The bit body assembly defining a mud pressure port communicating the lubricant reservoir cavity with the exterior of the bit body distal the lubricant passage means; a compensator disposed in the reservoir cavity and sealed thereacross between the lubricant passage means and the mud pressure port and movable in response to a pressure differential thereacross. The lubricant reservoir cavity having an assembly opening through the exterior of the main bit body, the assembly opening being sized and positioned to permit installation of the compensator into the reservoir cavity through the assembly opening. The bit body assembly further including a reservoir cap removably mounted in the assembly opening; a rolling cutter rotatably mounted on the pin structure and having an annular inner surface opposed to the outer surface of the pin structure; and a on-way pressure relief valve assembly mounted in the reservoir cap. The valve assembly including a valve element movable between open and closed positions, the valve element being mounted so that its movement from closed position to open position is in an outward direction, the valve assembly further including means operatively associated with the valve element for loading the valve element to its closed position.
