Partial oxidation process of sulfur, nickel, and vanadium-containing fuels
This patent describes a process for the production of gaseous mixtures. Comprising H/sub 2/+CO by the partial oxidation of a fuel feedstock comprising a heavy liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel having a nickel and vanadium containing ash or petroleum coke having a nickel and vanadium-containing ash or mixtures thereof; and the feedstock includes a minimum of 0.5 wt. % of sulfur; and the ash includes a minimum of 5.0 wt. % vanadium and a minimum of 0.5 ppm nickel. The process comprises: mixing together a basalt additive with the fuel feedstock; reacting the mixture at a temperature in the range of 2100{sup 0}F to 2600{sup 0}F and a pressure in the range of about 5 to 250 atmospheres in a free-flow refractory lined partial oxidation reaction zone with a free-oxygen containing gas in the presence of a temperature moderator and in a reducing atmosphere to produce a hot raw effluent gas stream comprising H/sub 2/+CO and entrained molten slag; and where in the reaction zone the basalt additive interacts with the ash and sulfur from the feedstock to produce molten slag comprising a minor amount of oxysulfide liquid phase washing agent, and a major amount of liquid silicate phase; and wherein from about 5.0 to 35 wt. % of vandium-containing oxide laths and spinels and other ash components and bit of refractory are washed out of the reaction zone by the oxysulfide liquid phase, and the remainder of the vanadium-containing oxide laths and spinels are washed out of the reaction zone and/or are dissolved by the silicate phase; and separating nongaseous materials from the hot raw effluent gas stream.
