Thermodynamic, interfacial, and structural properties of polyphasic microemulsion systems

The phase diagram of a brine comprising dodecane- pentanol-sodium octylbenzene sulfonate was examined, particularly in the 3-phase Winsor III region. The lowest interfacial tensions were observed in the 3-phase region. It was concluded that most microemulsion middle phases located along the microemulsion topological curve form near-critical interfaces with oil-rich and water-rich phases, showing that along the microemulsion phase curve, limits of critical behavior of bulk phases and interfaces are different. 19 references.
