The theoretical principles of turbulent combustion are presented with attention given to turbulence outside the context of chemical reactions to address gaps between basic and applied research. Methods are presented and systematized that apply to the deduction and closure of pdf (probability density fluctuation) equations for concentration and velocity, and concepts of intermittency are described in detail. Applications of the equations are given in connection with problems for treating the combustion of nonpremixed gases, partially premixed gases, and homogeneous combustible mixtures. The approach confirms the notion that fluid dynamic processes should be studied in the laboratory and by means of a coordinate system connected with the surfaces on which a flow characteristic is constant. It is concluded that universal pdfs can be obtained and that some simpler methods can be reevaluated, and a closed theory of turbulence and turbulent combustion is attained.
