Accurate determination of shielding requirements for diagnostic x-ray facilities has recently taken on added importance as new, lower limits are placed on exposure to ionizing radiation. In order to keep barrier costs in line yet maintain exposures to personnel and the general population at these lower levels, medical health physicists and regulators must become acquainted with new shielding information and techniques. This work discusses alternate materials and innovative methods recently presented in the literature. The goals of the Committee of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) charged with the revision of NCRP Report No. 49 (NCRP 49 Rewrite Committee) are also reviewed. 13 refs.
