Methane from landfills

Conference · · Energy Technol. (Wash., D.C.); (United States)

Methane recovered from municipal solid waste landfills could result in gas supplies sufficient to provide between a half and two million households with gas by 1990. Union Gas of Brooklyn has been investigating the recovery of methane from landfill, sludge, and treatment gas. A facility will be constructed at Fresh Kills, Staten Island to extract landfill gas and upgrade it to pipeline quality for injection into the utility system. Landfill gas is produced by anaerobic decomposition, and must be tested at each site. The Methane Development Corporation was created in March 1981. It has shown that extraction of methane is economically and technically feasible.
