A North American refiner plans to make money by building volume, efficiency and emphasizing customer convenience. The benefits from the Ultramar/Diamond Shamrock (UDS) merger initiated last fall have already met expectations in building shareholder value and bringing more profits to the bottom line. Now with the definitive agreement for UDS to acquire Total Petroleum, UDS will be one of the largest petroleum refining and marketing companies in North America, with a refining capacity of about 650,000 b/d, a network of 6,381 branded outlets in 19 states and six Canadian provinces, 5,679 miles of crude oil and refined product pipelines, and more than 23,000 employees. It`s no secret that as one of the largest refiners in the United States, this strategy will be carefully studied by other refining organizations that plan on playing a role in efficiently providing quality hydrocarbon based fuels and petrochemicals into the 21st Century.
