A series of new poly(m-xylylene) polymers has been synthesized as model compounds for low-rank coal. These polymers were prepared by the phenyllithium promoted coupling of {alpha},{alpha}{prime}-dibromo-m-xylene and {alpha},{alpha}{prime},5-tribromo-m-xylene in THF. The polymeric product (1) was then converted to a polycarboxylic acid (II) by metalation of the aryl bromide with n-butyllithium and reaction of the polyaryllithium with CO{sub 2}. The synthesis and characterization of these polymers will be discussed.
