Uprating the Pacific Northwest-Southwest HVDC Intertie.

The commissioning of the Pacific D-C Intertie in 1970 marked the first application of modern high-voltage direct-current transmission in the U.S. The design of this Intertie was made at a time when experience with long distance overhead d-c systems was very limited and was therefore understandably conservative. Experience with the operation of this line and advances in HVDC transmission technology have provided an opportunity to beneficially utilize this design margin to increase the Intertie capacity. 4 refs.
