Wood generation suits Vermont

Among the environmental and economic issues surrounding the Burlington (Vermont) wood-generation project was the question of where the plant would get its 500,000 green tons of chips each year. During the first year of operation, 25% was sawmill residues, 30-40% came from land clearing, and the remainder from thinning and integrated harvest operation. The US Forest Service estimates an excess of growth over removals should exceed the plant's 30-year life. The estimates also reveal that Vermont's timber resource is in bad condition, and the plant offers a market for otherwise unmarketable wood without harming the pulpwood market. Diverse ownership and a large radius of operations further preclude forest devastation. Studies of noise pollution and harvesting techniques are aimed at making the project environmentally sound and aesthetically pleasing.
