Plasma absorption of electromagnetic waves above the lower hybrid frequency

The absorption of electromagnetic waves at frequencies above the lower hybrid frequency is studied in a plasma in a toroidal magnetic field. At a hydorgen pressure of the order of 10/sup -3/ torr absorption occurs in the outer part of discharge, apparently because of collisional absorption of a surface mode. At lower pressures, the plasma density is reduced by the rf wave. Mechanisms capable of explaining the observations are discussed.
