Measurements of voltage distribution on suspension insulators for HVDC transmission lines

Journal Article · · IEEE Trans. Power Appar. Syst.; (United States)
A technique for measuring the DC voltage distribution on suspension insulator strings was developed. The technique involved the application of some specialized electrostatic voltmeters and distribution measurements were performed on a string of thirty glass insulators at voltages up to + or - 600 kV. Some of the factors which can influence the voltage distribution were studied. It was found that the voltage distribution was highly non-uniform with the line end insulators developing a greater than proportionate share of the applied voltage. Since the insulator string is immersed in a conducting medium (air) and the ionic current through the air surrounding the insulator string is substantially greater than the leakage current through the insulators, the voltage distribution along the string is essentially controlled by the potential distribution of the field between the line conductors and the transmission tower and is not controlled by the leakage resistances of the insulators themselves. Modification of the field distribution by the installation of a grading ring can significantly improve the voltage distribution along the string.
