City of Lakeland to generate power and burn municipal waste

Conference · · Proc. Am. Power Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5388257
The City of Lakeland, Florida's new 364-MW McIntosh Station Unit No. 3 will go into commercial operation in May of 1982. The unit is a joint venture, with 40 percent of it owned by the City of Orlando Utilities Commission. The steam generation system and air pollution control equipment were specified to be capable of firing a range of Eastern bituminous coals, No. 6 oil, as well as up to 10 percent municipal solid waste (MSW). The facility is, therefore, the largest refuse-to-energy electric generating station in the United States and the first such plant to be designed, from the start, to accommodate suspension firing of MSW in a utility boiler. This aspect of the plant design required special considerations in the boiler firing system design and arrangement and in the selection of materials.
