Neutral hydrogen near galactic radio sources: the Orion Nebula

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. AJ (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Observations are reported of the 21-cm line in absorption and the distribution of 21-cm emission features in the neighborhood of the Orion Nebula, as recorded at 2' x 20' angular resolution with the RATAN-600 radio telescope. The characteristics of the optical-depth distribution for H/sup 1/ in absorption and the configuration of emission-line features suggest that the nebula is surrounded by a rotating, expanding envelope of H/sup 1/ gas with a mass of order 100 M/sub sun/, presumably formed as an artifact of the motion of the H/sup 11/ region through the neutral interstellar gas at a velocity of approx. =10 km/sec.
