The authors study the effects of anodic pretreatment on the stability of Raney nickel surface catalysts (RSC), in addition to examining the changes in the characteristics of freshly leached catalyst during continuous, long-term cathodic polarization. Potentials of nickel RSC as functions of time during cathodic hydrogen evolution at different current densities are presented as are potentiodynamic curves recorded at nickel RSC in the original condition and after cathodic polarization. Electron-microscopic views of nickel RSC are shown. Polarization curves for cathodic hydrogen evolution at nickel RSC in different conditions are also shown.
