Proco, Inc., recently completed a horizontal oil well in the Austin chalk, a vertically fractured carbonate reservoir, in Pearsall field, Texas. The horizontal technique was used to tap multiple major fracture systems in the chalk matrix indicated by seismic and, hence, substantially increase productivity over a vertical hole which may or may not intersect a fracture system. This article discusses drilling, completion and production procedures used on the well and problems encountered in all three phases. Lessons learned are reviewed, and recommendations are made for improving future operations.
