Deuteron elastic scattering from /sup 208/Pb at energies below the Coulomb barrier

A modification of the adiabatic theory of deuteron elastic scattering at the nuclear surface is used to analyze deuteron scattering data at energies below the Coulomb barrier. It is shown that the adiabatic theory is capable of describing such processes. It is also shown that both the nuclear and the electrical interactions of the deuteron with the nucleus substantially affect the structure of the observed angular distributions at sub-barrier energies.
