Utilizing artificial standards in chemical analysis of coal

A discussion of the use of X-ray fluorescence for the determination of the elemental composition of coals was presented. The X-ray fluorescence method was determined to be relatively accurate and much quicker than conventional methods. The available coal standards that exist are generally unstable over a period of time and do not cover the range of compositions found in coals. A series of artificial standards were developed by fusing specific amounts of known materials in an amount of lithium tetraborate equal to the volatiles in coal.
