Search for anti pp resonances in the baryon exchange reaction. pi. + p. -->. delta. /sup + +/ anti pp at 9. 8 GeV/c

The results of a search for narrow mass states coupled to anti pp and produced in the baryon exchange reaction ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. ..delta../sup + +/ anti pp at 9.8 GeV/c are presented along with a complete description of the apparatus and analysis technique. At a anti pp mass of 2000 MeV the effective mass resolution was sigma = 11 MeV and the sensitivity was 0.67 events/nb. The resulting mass spectrum shows no evidence for such states from 1880 to 2500 MeV. The 4 standard deviation cross section upper limit is < 40 nb for the production of a narrow state at 2000 MeV.
