Production of {sup 239}Pu metal has traditionally been processed in glove-box enclosures to protect operating personnel and the outside environment from the hazards of radiation exposure and contamination. With the advent of more stringent federal regulations aimed at enhancing protection of personnel, the environment, and special nuclear materials, the Savannah River Site (SRS) is investigating plutonium-processing concepts in a totally remote environment using automated work stations with robotic materials transfer and equipment maintenance. The testing program should provide answers for the long-term goals of the remote facility operation, which include exposure reduction, near-real-time accountability, safeguards, and waste reduction while providing superior product quality in an ultrasafe environment. The design concept will achieve a new level in environmental protection.
