Plans for four solar domestic hot water heating systems available from various organizations or individuals are reviewed. One plan utilizes a 4 by 8 ft collector with serpentine piping and constructed of aluminum sheets bent over the copper tube flow pattern. A 55 gal drum located above the collector in an insulated box contains two series of copper pipes for the potable water and the antifreeze heat transfer fluid. The units cost about $300. Another system utilizing a flat plate collector with serpentine copper tubing may be constructed as an active or a thermosyphoning system for about $700. The Breadbox water heater employs an insulated box with a reflector/lid containing black painted water heater tanks which have been stripped of insulation. The box is glazed and may contain two or three water tanks. Another Breadbox design is similar but does not use insulation or insulated, reflective doors. This design is more suitable for southern climates. Other sources of information on solar water heaters are listed.
