Truck exhaust noise: challenge for the 1980's

Quieter trucks are on the way; 1982's tighter noise regulations require it. But can noise be reduced without substantially increasing initial cost, fuel consumption, and maintenance. Donaldson Co. engineers have studied truck exhaust noise, silencing techniques, and the effects new exhaust systems would have on truck performance. They see larger mufflers, double-wall pipes, and multiple-component systems as probable approaches to truck noise reduction for the 1980's.
