Manganese fuel additive can cause catalyst problems

Journal Article · · Automot. Eng. (N.Y.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5379897
Some recently introduced unleaded gasolines have resulted in automobile catalytic converter plugging, and researchers have found the antiknock additive methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) to be partially at fault. Test results on in-service vehicles are described, and results of deposit microanalyses are given. A possible plugging mechanism is proposed, and emission tests, taken both at the engine and at the tailpipe, are compared. (PMA)
