A method for reworking a well consists of the steps of (1) setting a packer in the bore of a well above the perforations/ (2) inserting tubing through the packer/ (3) pumping a mixture of calcium carbide and a liquid hydrocarbon carrier through the tubing and packer into the well bore and formation/ (4) pumping a hydrocarbon through the tubing to force all of the mixture into the well bore and surrounding formation/ (5) pumping an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid through the tubing and packer into the well bore and surrounding formation/ (6) pumping a liquid hydrocarbon into the tubing to displace all liquids into the formation surrounding the well bore/ and (7) securing the well bore to prevent escape of the reactants during the reaction.
