Mobil to use innovative setting method on Beryl B
Mobil North Sea Ltd. will use a unique method to ensure exact placement of its Beryl B platform over a template with predrilled wells. At stake is the possibility of damage to previously installed ocean floor equipment-predrilled wells ready for tie-back to the platform deck and the template itself. The Beryl B jacket is believed to be one of the heaviest to be placed over a subsea template, with the jacket and appurtenances weighing in at just over 14,000 metric tons. The template is designed to accommodate 21 wells, 6 of which are planned for drilling before the jacket is barged out. Some of the 21 wells will be used for water injection for pressure maintenance, and some will return produced gas to the reservoir in a conservation move. The Beryl B jacket design calls for temporary buoyancy tanks and tubes to be used during the installation phase. Two flotation tanks will be supplemented by eight buoyancy tubes supported in the pile guides. Once the jacket is set on bottom, these will be removed so the guides will be free to accept piling. The template is equipped with three locating pile guides, one at each of two corners and one along the opposite side. After the locating piles are driven, the pile cones are cut loose from the template to avoid any transfer of decking loads to the template during jacket installation.
