Angular distributions for energy-resolved photoemitted electrons from resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) via the two-photon allowed 6{ital p}({ital j}=1/2){sub {ital J}=0}, 6{ital p}(3/2){sub 2}, 6{ital p}{prime}(1/2){sub 0}, 6{ital p}{prime}(3/2){sub 2}, 7{ital p}(1/2){sub 0}, 7{ital p}(3/2){sub 2}, and 7{ital p}(5/2){sub 2} states and the three-photon allowed 7{ital s}(3/2){sub 1}, 8{ital s}(3/2){sub 1}, 9{ital s}(3/2){sub 1}, 5{ital d}(3/2){sub 1}, 5{ital d}{prime}(5/2){sub 3}, and 5{ital d}{prime}(3/2){sub 1} states of xenon and the three-photon allowed 5{ital s}(3/2){sub 1}, 6{ital s}(3/2){sub 1}, 4{ital d}(3/2){sub 1}, 4{ital d}(5/2){sub 3}, and 4{ital d}(7/2){sub 3} states of krypton are reported. In one case, two-photon resonant, three photon ionization ((2+1) REMPI) of the 6{ital p}{prime}(1/2){sub 0} state of xenon, a dramatic laser-power dependence (power {similar to}1.5{times}10{sup 10} to {similar to}3{times}10{sup 10} W/cm{sup 2}), was observed. The measured angular distributions for electrons leaving either ion core ({sup 2}{ital P}{sub 1/2} or {sup 2}{ital P}{sub 3/2}) are compared with those calculated from multichannel quantum-defect theory.
