A composition useful as a diverting agent in the treatment of subterranean strata penetrated by a well bore consists of an aqueous suspension containing slowly water-soluble particulate dextrin materials, slowly water-soluble particulate aldehyde polymers, and a thickening and/or suspending agent.The method of treating a formation penetrated by a well bore to divert fluids from more porous strata to less porous strata consists of injecting the composition down the well bore under sufficient pressure to force at least a portion of it into the more porous formation where the composition serves as a temporary plugging agent to divert fluids, such as fracturing fluids or other treating fluids to less porous, accessible or tighter portions of the formation.
