Precipitation acidity: the role of the forest canopy in acid exchange

Journal Article · · J. Environ. Qual.; (United States)
Individual rain episodes were sampled above and below a forest canopy in Tennessee to analyze acidity and organic content. Although weak acids constituted 30% of the total acidity of incident rain and increased to more than 50% in throughfall, the increase cannot be attributed entirely to the presence of organic acids. Strong acid is partially removed from rain at the leaf surface. (4 graphs, 35 references, 2 tables)
