Effect of permeability variation and mobility ratio on five-spot oil recovery performance calculations

Correlations are available for predicting the injectivity and areal sweep efficiency of uniform permeability flooding patterns as a function of the mobility ratio between the injected fluid and the oil. In the present study, this has been extended to investigate the effect of mobility ratio on both the injectivity and sweep of stratified 5-spot patterns. The results indicate that for any permeability stratification, mobility ratio has a marked effect on oil recovery at injected fluid breakthrough at mobility ratios between 0.10 and 10. However, there is a decreased effect of mobility ratio on breakthrough recovery both above and below this range. This points out that decreasing the injected fluid (water) mobility would be expected to have little effect on sweep at breakthrough if the mobility ratio by conventional waterflooding is below about 0.1. However, injecting fluids of increased viscosity frequently can improve the oil displacement efficiency from the swept portion of the reservoir. In predicting the oil recovery performance of fluid injection operations, one frequently assumes that the reservoir is composed of a series of horizontal layers, each of uniform properties, continuous from well to well, and insulated from cross flow between layers.
