Reviving a declining field. [Venezuela]

Venezuela has another active company. The firm is the Orocual Petroleum Co., a subsidiary of the International Oil Co. of New York. Knowing that the large international companies now have various marginal oil fields in Venezuela, Orocual entered into negotiations with Cia Shell de Venezuela and closed a deal for the W. field, La Pica, in the state of Monagas. Prior to the closing of this deal, La Pica had produced 9.9 million bbl of 18.2 API crude. In the hands of the Orocual Co., the field is on the way to revival. Workover of some of the wells has raised the production of the field to 2,500 bpd, and, occasionally, at the rate of 5,000 bpd. Orocual believes the field has a potential of 10,000 bpd. Situated in a block of 4,000 ha and having 13 producing wells, Orocual proposes to rework all of these and drill others. It is believed that success in this project for this smaller company will pave the way for other small private companies to enter Venezuela.
