Gasoline volatility -- an increasing industry problem

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5373613
Gasoline volatility has claimed the attention of the Environmental Protection Agency. It is ironic that the lead phasedown has played a major role in bringing more-volatile gasoline to the marketplace. Increased process severity to improve octane quality has generated more butanes and other light gasoline hydrocarbons. Alcohols, because of their excellent octane quality, also have added to overall gasoline volatility. The ultimate solution will be more condensation processing to convert butanes to heavier-high-octane components. The need for process expansion will impinge directly on possible EPA regulations to control Reid vapor pressure and ASTM distillation specifications of gasoline.
