Petroleum effects in the Arctic environment

This book reviews research on the physical and ecological effects of petroleum in the arctic environment. An overview of the arctic marine environment is presented that covers the special problems of ice and low temperature from an ecological perspective and discusses their influence on the fate of spilled oil. A survey is given of experimental data on the effects of petroleum on arctic biota. Microbes and biodegradation potential and the effects of petroleum on all types of animals, from invertebrates to marine mammals, are discussed. Finally, the book treats the indirect effects of petroleum on native human inhabitants and the impact of oil on renewable animal resources.
