The purpose of this conference was to provide a multidisciplinary forum for exchange of state-of-the-art information on genetic mapping of Escherichia coli. Topics of discussion include the following: large scale sequencing efforts; sequence analysis and data bases; front end and sequencing technologies; chromosome organization; gene regulation; genome evolution; and chromosome inheritance. Abstracts of the papers are included.
