Field test of residential earth coupled heat pumps in a northern climate

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5372687
A seven site field test of state-of-the-art residential earth coupled heat pump systems in Central New York is underway. The field test is a cooperative effort, co-funded by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RGE). The project scope of work encompassed horizontal and vertical earth heat exchangers, heating and cooling, freeze and nonfreeze horizontal systems, and coverage of the Syracuse, Rochester and Albany regions. This paper summarizes the findings of the project to date, and presents the first major evaluation of this technology under the harsh climate and soil conditions of Central New York.
