Title: Synthesis and crystal structure of NaV/sub 6/O/sub 11/

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

Single crystals of NaV/sub 6/O/sub 11/ have been grown by electrolytic reduction of a sodium-vanadate melt: NaVO/sub 3/ at 700/sup 0/C at atmospheric pressure. The crystal structure was refined to R = 0.036 for 625 observed reflections; NaV/sub 6/O/sub 11/ is shown to be hexagonal with lattice parameters; a = 5.699(1) A and c = 13.07(1) A, Z = 2. The space group is P anti 62c. The Na cations are surrounded by 12 oxygen anions which form cuboctahedral sites. The V(1) and V(3) cations are surrounded by octahedra, while the V(2) cations occupy triangular bipyramidal sites. The V(1)O/sub 6/ octahedra, which have linked edges, form layers parallel to the (001) plane. Two layers are connected by V(3)/sub 2/O/sub 9/ faces of linked double octahedra which share corners with the upper and lower V(1)O/sub 6/ octahedra. V(2) and Na cations are also present between these layers.
