Refining of syncrudes from the H-Coal liquefaction process

Conference · · Proc., Am. Pet. Inst., Refin. Dep.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5369554
Two H-Coal syncrudes derived from Illinois No. 6 and Wyodak coals were refined in an extensive program that included pilot plant and laboratory studies. The cost of refining was estimated from engineering studies. These studies demonstrated that advanced, commercial petroleum technology can be used to refine the syncrudes to gasoline, jet, diesel, and heating fuels and to transform the syncrude impurities into safe and valuable byproducts. The engineering studies provided estimates of the refining costs for ''grass roots'' refineries that would produce 50,000 barrels per calendar day of products. The first quarter 1981 refining costs from Illinois H-Coal syncrude range from $10 to $15 per barrel of product, depending on the desired product slate. The refining costs for the Wyodak H-Coal syncrude (which contains more hydrogen) range from $8 to $13 per barrel of product. These costs do not include the cost of the H-Coal syncrude.
