The dynamic compaction of powders can be performed either by projectiles colliding at high velocity with powders or by the direct method of explosive compaction, where an explosive pressure is acting directly onto a container wall. Emphasis is placed on the direct method. The explosive's parameter necessary to obtain a uniform compaction over the cross section and a maximum density in a cylindrical sample is described and compared with such values obtained from gas gun experiments. The substructural changes in matter due to high dynamic pressures, the activation of a post sinter treatment and the shock wave synthesis of materials are described.
