Rapid solidification technology has resulted in the development of the elevated temperature aluminum alloy Al-8Fe-4Ce. This alloy produced from gas-atomized powder has usable mechanical properties in the 150-350 C range. An alternative method for producing this alloy involving a faster solidification rate process is chill-block melt-spinning. An alloy of Al-8Fe-4Ce was cast onto a copper wheel in air which produced melt-spun ribbon about 75 {mu}m thick. The microstructures of the as-produced and heat-treated ribbon have been characterized using optical and electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that the difference in microstructures can be directly correlated with microhardness measurements.
