Journal Article · · Tappi; (United States)

Examined are the background, development, and status of a landfill project using sludge from the Westvaco Corp.'s Luke Pulp and Paper Mill in Allegany County, Md. The objectives of the project were to determine: the practicality of landfilling sludge in abandoned and active coal stripmines near the plant; the optimal mixing ratio of sludge to spoil; the best method of mixing; and the beneficial effect of sludge on spoil material in a large-scale operation. From August 1975-July 1976, 69,000 tons of sludge were successfully landfilled in an abandoned coal stripmine. Two additional landfill sites in operation since July 1976 are described. The project has demonstrated that a high-ash paper mill sludge can be effectively landfilled.
