Coal's future growth in power generation hinges upon the cost and availability of natural gas. As gas prices rise, coal gasification and other technologies become viable options. The electric power generation business has undergone two momentous changes over the last decade. The first is the deregulation and resulting competition in power generation. This is one of the most important events since the oil shocks of the 1970s. Second is the dramatic shift in power generation technology away from large coal-fired boiler steam systems to smaller natural gas-fired, combustion turbine-based systems. The two changes are interrelated because the regulatory changes benefit combustion turbines. Several key issues affect the use of combustion turbine systems for electric power generation. A recent study of combustion turbine power systems by SFA Pacific, a technology consulting group based in Mountain View, Calif., examined the future of coal and gas technology options around the world. The study found that new coal technologies have viable opportunities in the future power generation mix.
