Technological solutions to declining productivity in underground mining

Journal Article · · Min. Congr. J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5368201
The 38% decline in coal productivity has had a remarkable correlation with the 80% increase in coal prices. The cause of this decline involves rising ecological concerns and the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. Mining accessibility, energy requirements, and production costs are discussed. The growth of modern underground mining technology, including its constraints (material strength, ore body shape, and competency of the host rock), is reviewed. Improvements in continuous miners could reduce mining company expenses by 10%. USBM policies affecting the industry are examined. (3 diagrams, 4 graphs)
