Toward a microscopic understanding of the interacting boson model of nuclei
Fermion shell model Hamiltonians are constructed which have a class of eigenstates composed of monopole pairs and quadrupole pairs only. Since no boson approximation needs to be made, the Pauli principle is kept intact. Because the SO/sub 8/ model has a one-to-one correspondence between the space spanned by the fermion states composed of the special monopole and quadrupole pairs of neutrons and protons and the space spanned by the monopole and quadrupole bosons, it is discussed in detail. Recent developments in the Sp/sub 6/ model are also reported. These two models classify all the shell model states by the number of identical fermion pairs not coupled to coherent monopole or quadrupole pairs. It is suggested that light nuclei may combine features of both SU/sub 3/ and SO/sub 6/ symmetry simultaneously. 27 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs. (LEW)
