A study has been performed on under-, peak- and overaged structures in a I/M 7150 aluminum alloy to investigate the distribution of crack closure along the length of fatigue cracks at the threshold {Delta}K{sub TH} condition. By micro-machining of material in the wake of the crack tip, it is shown that previously arrested cracks can commence to propagate at {Delta}K{sub TH}. Further, by monitoring the closure during the micro-machining process, it can be shown that over 50% of the closure is within 1 mm of the crack tip. Such phenomena are discussed in terms of the various micro-mechanisms of closure which predominate in the three microstructural conditions.
