Several independent and sponsored research programs have recently demonstrated the capability of developing and utilizing superplastic properties in high strength aluminum alloys for aerospace applications. This paper presents an overview of this development, particularly the various microstructural and mechanical aspects of superplasticity in fine grain 7475 Al alloys. The importance of the slip based processes in addition to grain boundary sliding is emphasized. These processes are found to exercise a major role in the strain hardening and plastic flow process in these materials, in conjunction with the process of dynamic grain growth. A discussion of superplastic cavity development and growth, as well as a method for its suppression is presented. Comparisons are made with thermomechanically processed P/M Al alloys as well as alloys exhibiting dynamic recrystallization during superplastic forming.
