Dry weight and nutrient content of fuelwood biomass from loblolly pine stands in North Louisiana

Journal Article · · For. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5366528

Three mature loblolly pine stands in north Louisiana were sampled to determine the dry weight and nutrient content of both the understory hardwoods and the pine biomass that would remain following a conventional harvest. Approximately 52 t/ha of understory hardwoods and 22 t/ha of pine residues were estimated to exist in these stands. Combined, this biomass contained 208, 16, 114, 215, and 40 kg/ha of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. Potential removal of these quantities in a fuelwood harvest would not appear to greatly diminish soil pools of the same elements.
