In an effort to determine opinions and attitudes toward mining and mining companies, one hundred forty-nine interviews were conducted during the summer of 1974 in three communities in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Each of these communities are underlain by significant quantities of coal and all of the communities were ''mining towns'' in the late 19th and early 20th century associated with the deep mining of anthracite coal. At the present time only a very small proportion of the residents of these communities work for, or are associated with, mining companies. The amount of strip mining currently being undertaken, as well as the potential disruption to these communities if strip mining is increased, were the principal criteria for community selection.
