Theory of passive mode locking in the colliding-pulse mode
This article investigates the fundamental regularities of lasing for the case of scattering of counterpropagating waves by the wave-induced (burned) spatial loss grating in a saturable absorber. It is demonstrated in a model of an inertialess saturable absorber and gain following the intensity averaged over the axial period that passive mode locking in a ring or linear laser will make the transition to stationary pulse production beginning with any initial conditions. It is demonstrated that bistability and multistability will arise with certain system parameters. Specifically under conditions of sufficient absorber saturation lasing in a linear laser may terminate in either single-pulse or two-pulse modes depending on the initial conditions. Ultrashort pulse durations are compared for the case of ring and linear locking schemes. The change in the nature of light pulse formation as a function of saturable absorber thickness is analyzed.
