During hot rolling of ferritic stainless steels (FeCr steels) the deformation mode changes through the sheet thickness. Whereas in the surface layer shear deformation takes place, in the center layer nearly plain strain conditions are fulfilled. This through-thickness inhomogeneity of the hot rolled sheet can be detected by measuring the corresponding orientation distribution of the grains in each layer. The orientation distribution of crystals in crystalline solids is referred to as (crystallographic) texture. It can be determined from pole figure measurements and subsequent computation of the Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) by means of the series expansion method. The ODF is commonly presented in the Euler space. For the modeling of the hot rolling deformation the method of superposition of harmonic currents (SHC) was applied. The simulations were compared to the experimentally inspected profile of the hot rolling texture of a ferritic stainless steel with 16% Cr content through the thickness of the sheet.
