Norwegian and Barents Seas: oil for the 21st century

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)
OSTI ID:5363545
North of 62/sup 0/N, the North Sea shelf plunges under water up to 3,000 feet deep, and off the west coast of Norway the continental shelf is rarely shallower than 650 feet. Sedimentary basins of the North Sea continue northeast off the coast of central Norway, and there are also deep basins in the southern Barents Sea off northern Norway. The undrilled basins of the Norwegian and Barents seas have geological characteristics similar to those of some of the world's major producing areas. Plans are to drill the first offshore well in the Barents Sea. Full evaluation of the prospects of these basins will take many years, and oil and gas fields, if found, may not reach full scale production until after the year 2000.
