A new magnetically insulated ion diode geometry has been developed for use on a 270-kV, 3.3-..cap omega.., 80-ns pulse line. A proton beam is extracted at approx.100 A/cm/sup 2/ with a divergence angle of < or approx. = 2/sup 0/ (full width at half angle), and focused to over 600 A/cm/sup 2/. Magnetic insulation is provided by a current flowing through a conductor on the axis of the diode in the same direction as the ion beam.
